Planning After approval from administration, it was time to get the ball rolling with organizing events. With spring break in the coming weeks we are only able to hold two events, Popping with Positivity and Board Games. We started by asking Mr. Large to send out our Google Form to get a feel for the number of students are will be attending each event, so we can make sure we have enough supplies. Next, we asked Mr. Burk to include our flyer in NP120 to spread the word to the student body to get more individuals involved. (We are hoping to get a good crowd!) After spreading the word, we starting gathering everything we will need to make the event run smoothly. We made a bucket for the entry names to go in and retrieved the movie the we are going to show, as well contacted a local movie theatre to inquire about purchasing or having them donate some popcorn to complement the movie! Popping with Positivity
Today our first event, Popping with Positivity, was held in the media center. We sent out a google form to get a number of how many students we would have in attendance, but we were pleasantly surprised that the number doubled to forty! During lab A, Kaylin, Haley, and I went to the media center to set up the movie and pour popcorn into cups. Our only problem was that we could not get the audio to work at first, but after the movie started everyone seemed to enjoy this event! I am looking forward to our next in two weeks:)

Approval In order to make such a large project come to life, my group composed an plan that we proposed to our Principle and Assistant Principle last week on Thursday. Later that day the Assistant Principle emailed us that she loved the idea and could not wait to see what comes from our project! This was all we needed to get the ball rolling as we will have busyness in the weeks ahead. Making this Possible Ultimately the first thing on our to do list is picking dates and reserving locations for our events to be held. Seeing as we hope that a majority of the school participates in our activities the cafeteria and gymnasium are the best places for large amounts of people. We are working to finalize dates with the help of Mr. Large and then get them onto the official calendar. The next most important thing is deciding events that are engaging and entices students to want to participate. Young adults often crowd their time by other distractions or have a lack of interest to become involved in activities, which are major concerns for the functionality of this project. My group has been brainstorming over the last week or so to come up with events that students would be willing to be involved in, whether it be to boost their own mental health or just to participate with friends. Within this series we have six opportunities to hold events so each one counts. We have ideas ranging from art to music therapy, stress relief, and understanding morals. Furthermore, my group is creating a google form that will be sent out to the students for them to select the events they are interested in attending (that way we will have an idea of the number of attendees and if we need to gather additional supplies). With ideas in mind I took the opportunity to create eye catching flyers that will be shown in the weekly NP120 broadcasts. Each week the upcoming event will be previewed so that students are aware of what activity we will be hosting. Each flyers lists the name and what will be happening during the event, as well as location and other necessary information needed. Our rough drafts are attached below. As we are continuing to plan the events, we are also researching the necessary supplies needed per event. Finally what sets a great event apart without an equally great incentive. High school students are often more interested in something when there is an incentive or prize involved. For our project we decided that we would use a drawing system, meaning that each time someone attends an event their name will be dropped into a bucket. At the end of series, one name will be drawn and that individual will be awarded with the prize (as of right now we are thinking a $20 gift card).
Onto the Next Through Service Learning my hope has been not only to make an impact on others, but to form the connection between school and community interaction. Surprisingly after some time on social media then doing some research, I have found the perfect way to incorporate both aspects. Over the course of the next three months I am hoping to create a program that involves various activities to boost overall mental health. Mental Health awareness has been a growing phenomenon in the recent years, especially at New Palestine High School, and I believe our school needs a steady program that will give students the opportunity to reach out. Ideas of different activities began to flood my brain so I pitched the ideas to Mr. Large for guidance and to ensure something like this could even be established. He loved the idea! I enlisted a few friends, Kaylin Casner and Haley Rickey, to help me tackle the large job ahead. We began brainstorming all of the events that we could host, where would the events would be held, and how to even make this program possible. Project Proposal
A majority of the details are starting to fall into place before we can present our game plan to administration. The Mental Health Series will be a two month series every other Wednesday during homeroom or lab. We are planning events such as Cookies & Canvas, Popping for Positivity, Calming Canines, and much more. The intention and activities of each event are planned but the minor details of supplies and hosts are up in air. An incentive to grab the attention of students is in the works, as well as spreading the word of the program. |
