Preparation On my last post I expressed the changes that we needed to make to help our program. I got to work on narrowing down the topics to include in this week's presentation. I decided that many of the residents would most likely benefit from the applications to communicate such as messaging, FaceTime, and calling. By changing a few slides around, I had created a step by step of how to use these applications. We would even take the residents through how to use them until they were comfortable. Presentation
We lost two attendees but this session was great! We passed out the cheat sheet I created and the presentation began. The attendees brought their smart phones so that we could walk through the applications and were quick learners. I worked with a couple of the ladies working through the process of learning to message, call, and FaceTime. These ladies loved the FaceTime app and said they are looking forward to seeing to their grandchildren!

Cyber Seniors Through our Senior Night project, the biggest aspect we are hoping to implement is called Cyber Seniors. This program is a learning based presentation to help the residents feel more comfortable using the new twenty-first century technology. Cyber Seniors will start as a few week program addressing functions concerning smart phones, computers, and televisions. My group decided that we would start this program with information about smart phones. Creation To begin this process, I started by making a powerpoint addressing some of the functions and buttons with smart phones. Since many of the residents are familiar with these products but not confident with using them, creating step by step instructions was the best idea. I added an abundance of images and arrows to highlight the important features. Trying the steps was even going to be a part of the presentation. Presentation
So the first session was not as successful as we had hoped. Five residents came to be apart of the experience, but only two actually owned smart phones. We gave our power point presentation to our small audience and finally concluded with time for help and questions. They did not really have many questions because they claimed they were confused about what we talking about. Room for Improvement Although the first session was not as successful, we still have a few more sessions to improve upon. We are planning to make changes to our presentation method and the information we will cover. Making a step by step pamphlet for the residents to keep, and reviewing less information will make the session go smoother. Stay tuned for more results in the weeks to come! Planning At the beginning of the semester my partner, Haley Weinrich, and I met with Woodland Terrace's Life Enrichment coordinator, Lindsey Watts, to brainstorm exciting events for the residents. Haley and I presented some events that were put on the calendar, but Lindsey offered us the task of helping with a Lady's Fashion Show. This will be the first annual Lady's Fashion Show at Woodland Terrace. We were being tasked with finding a photographer and arriving early to help set up. Studio 52 was asked to sponsor this event by contributing a few racks of clothes, tables of jewelry, and beauty products for the women to use or purchase. The Fashion Show
A couple hours before the show, wardrobe and appearance were in full swing. The ladies took out their hot rollers and up on makeup from an array of lipsticks, mascaras, and eye shadows. Studio 52 brought a couple racks of scarfs, shirts, and cardigans for the ladies to choose from. After completing the final touches, these ladies were ready to walk the runway. Residents, friends, family, and spouses took their seats as the ladies lined up backstage. The MC cued the music and the ladies paraded down aisle, just like a real fashion show. Some of the server boys volunteered to be escorts, which added to the excitement and experience. The audience applauded and the photographer snapped numerous pictures to capture the big smiles on each lady's face. Based on the dancing and model poses, it is safe to say these ladies really loved getting all of the attention and looked great doing it! What Is Senior Night? The first project I am pursuing is Senior Night, where we hope to intertwine our community with the elderly. My partner, Haley Weinrich, and I came to this project idea after volunteering at the Woodland Terrace facility, as well as enjoying the company of the elderly. We want to start involving high school students from our community to enhance the lifestyles of the elderly. Proposal & Pitch Day Recently our class held Pitch Day to present our ideas to school administrators from our district. My group prepared by gathering information about the necessary resources, logistics of the project, setting timelines, and accomplishing the main goals. We connected with Woodland Terrace's Life Enrichment coordinator, Lindsey Watts, to help put our ideas into action. Lindsey Watts will be a huge factor in accessing the needed resources of space to hold events. We will need to work with Mr. Large in order to acquire grants for the refreshments and supplies per event. Finally, start creating Google Forms to get volunteers from our school to participate in our events. The estimated timeline for our project will begin first semester holding many events and hopefully processing through second semester. Our major objectives for this project include giving residents events to look forward to, giving individuals the opportunities to make connections with the residents, and creating a program to help the residents with technology usage. All in all, the Pitch Day was successful and we received good feedback from administrators to improve the functionality of our project. Next Steps After Pitch Day, Haley Weinrich and I took action to get the ball rolling quickly. We scheduled a meeting with Lindsey Watts at Woodland Terrace to decide on the events we could hold and set the dates for these to occur. Our first major creation through this project is called Cyber Seniors. This is a technology focused program about cell phone usage, computer programs, and general technology devices that will happen every Wednesday afternoon in October. We are hoping to solve the problems the residents are having with the new twenty-first century inventions. Other activities are in the works for after fall break! |
